History: The club celebrated its centenary in 1912, although football in the town dates back to 1882 and Hebburn Argyle. French engineer Alphonse Reyrolle gifted what it is now the stadium for his workforce for football, cricket, bowls and tennis. Hebburn's Northern League history began in 1989, although it was relegated for the ground not being up to standard. Town won promotion at the end of the 2011-12 season to Northern League Division 1 after a third place finish. The club that season also reached the final qualifying round of The FA Cup – the furthest the club has reached before a 3-0 defeat at Gateshead.

From the North: (Darlington 34 miles) From the A1, head straight over Whitemare Pool and then turn left at the roundabout after the garage. This will take you onto Mill Lane. Here you’ll find the Cock Crow Inn (a 15 minute walk away from the ground) and then The Mill Tavern. To get to the ground from Mill Lane, turn right at the traffic lights at the top, where Hebburn Fire Station is, and the stadium on the left as you go along Victoria Road. Hebburn Sports & Social Ground is situated just off Victoria Road, which is the main road that runs through Hebburn from Jarrow. The postcode for the football ground is NE31 1UN. There are entrances on South Drive and also on North Drive. These are residential roads and both run off Victoria Road on either side of the football ground.

Parking: Very limited parking is available in the small car park which is accessible on South Drive. It is recommended fans make use of public parking facilities in the town, a short walk away. Spaces are available at Hebburn Shopping Centre, just off Station Road, which you’ll pass if you drive to the football ground via Jarrow. Station Road is a right turn off Victoria Road where the traffic lights are.

Hebburn Town have a clubhouse, however if there is a large attendance the space will be limited, so get there early. Entrance to the clubhouse is via the front double doors only and the bar is up the stairs. There is no entry through the emergency exits.

There are other bars available in Hebburn but it seems something of a real ale desert. Travelling along Victoria Road from Jarrow, there is The Clock, Victoria Rd, NE31 1YQ (on the right) and then The Longship, Ushaw Road, NE31 2YA (left off Victoria Rd, next door to Hebburn Swimming Baths, is part of the John Barras chain). Otherwise, it's best really to drink in central Newcastle and head for the train.

The Borough Arms, 82 Bensham Road, NE8 1PS
Next to Windmill Hills Park, this is a small real ale haven, with a fondness for micro breweries, a coal fire and does snacks. A little way from the stadium but worth a post-Christmas snifter here. Click for Streetmap

The Central Bar

Central Hotel, Half Moon Lane, Gateshead, NE8 2AN
This is owned by the Head Of Steam real ale chain, sympathetically refurbished to its mid-Victorian glory and fully re-opened in September close to the Quayside and easily reached over the Tyne. It has several real ales on. DAFTS recommended.

Newcastle pubs:

Crown Posada, 31 The Side, Newcastle, NE1 3JE
On a road that weaves down to the Quayside from the centre of town. Ted says that in his time there in the 80s, this Victorian Grade II listed pubt served Taylors Landlord and toasted curry sandwiches (albeit with sultanas in the curry!). Today the toasties are no longer on offer but the beer is still good and the food is now stotties with basic fillings. The wide beer choice on a last visit included a local Wylam ale, Mordue Workie Ticket, Black Sheep, Jarrow plus a couple from Hadrian and Border - Gladiator Bitter and the curiously named Are You Listening Gordon Heal?

The Newcastle Arms, 57 St Andrews Street, NE1 5SE
This is a friendly pub with a large real ale range, with usually a dozen beers to choose from. Popular with CAMRA members. The pub doesn't serve food, but you're welcome to bring your own. It's close to St James' Park in the city centre, so can get busy when Toon are at home.

Others worth a try, which are easy to reach from the station or Metro, are The Bodega, 125 Westgate Road, NE1 4AG and the Bridge Hotel, Castle Square, NE1 1R
